The event is open to Muscle Cars of all
ages and descriptions, Ford, Holden, Mopar and Chev. If you think you have a
muscle car, it will probably qualify for this event. There is even a section
for “Home Grown Muscle” you know what I mean, things like the V8 Escort that you
have hidden under the tarp in the back shed.
The emphasis for the event is to be a weekend of speed,
cars, and horsepower and you can compete as seriously as you want, with big
emphasis on fun and safety because no-one wants to see your’s or anyone else’s
car damaged.
The event will be hosted by the Warwick District Sporting
Car Club Inc (WDSCC) over the weekend of the 7th & 8th
June 2008. We know our
stuff, we own the most challenging all bitumen track
dedicated to club level motor sport in Qld. Morgan Park Raceway is a “drivers
track” reminiscent of Lakeside in its heyday without all the car damaging Armco
and with large run off’s and catch traps to keep you off the few walls that are
there.
The way the event will be run is a Super Sprint format,
best described as individual cars competing against the clock in close
proximity, started in pairs and with a maximum of only eight cars on the track
at any one time. This format allows you to drive as close or as far away from
or as close to the car you are paired with at your discretion. You will even
be allowed to organise your own pairings or groups to see how you and your
mate’s cars perform under identical conditions. There will also be a “State of
Origin” challenge run across the entire event.
This will be a professionally organised and run event using
FIA and CAMS guidelines with trained and certified flag marshals
and full professional safety crews on duty at all times.
If you are looking for a show and shine or a burn out
competition or even thinking of putting on a drift display, you will be totally
disappointed, if you want to stretch the legs of your muscle car and see what
times it can run on a race circuit, you will need an angle grinder to get the
grin off your face by Sunday afternoon.
Let us take you for a “hot lap”
of the 2.11km circuit. Off the start line it is a drag strip to the first
corner, on the brakes and into a right hand turn, then back through the gears
and a dab of power to a harder right hander which turns back to a long left hand
sweep over the hill and under the foot bridge. A long down hill straight to
stretch the legs, then a brake test into the “Gumtree”, a sharp right hander,
find a cog you like then stick the loud pedal through the firewall into a fast
left hand sweeper then on the brakes again and into “Siberia” (because its miles
from anywhere) a sharp right hander. The get the line through Siberia right is
a thing of beauty and will set you up nicely for the run up the hill. At the
top of the hill you are going to find a fast left hand turn that is best run in
a perfect curve just nudging the apex on the way through, coming out into the
gully it is on the power and pull a gear, or let the revs build to hear your car
shattering the peace and quite, then through the “Esses”, a challenging flip
flop to set yourself up for the right hander then onto the straight. The more
speed you can carry through here the faster your next run down the main straight
will be.
Sounds a bit daunting? Driver training and track
familiarisation including race craft by people experienced on Morgan Park will
be provided prior to the event.
What do I need to compete?
You will need a CAMS Level 2S licence, this requires no
testing only an application which can be logged through
www.cams.com.au, at a cost of $88. This licence will allow you to compete
and be covered by CAMS insurance for a full year but you will need to have the
license with you as they will not be available at the track Other requirements
will be listed in the event application form.
What’s it going to cost me?
For two full days of competition, horsepower, speed and a
celebration of the muscle car it will set you back around $110. Gate admission
for both days is FREE.
